Agnilism: A Conceptual Ideology

Many philosophers have suggested different ideologies when it comes to understanding our universe and, in turn, how we should act based on this understanding. Religion often states that a higher being created us and provided a guide on how to act (e.g., the Bible), while atheists believe that our universe emerged from naturally occurring events, typically allowing for more flexible approaches to morality.

Agnilism offers an alternative path, blending agnosticism and nihilism into a unique worldview. It acknowledges the possibility that a God or higher power may exist but simultaneously accepts that it’s equally plausible that such a being does not. This stance arises from recognizing that neither theistic beliefs nor scientific theories like the Big Bang can be proven beyond all doubt, as counterarguments can always be found. Agnilism maintains that we exist in a universe without clear answers, and any sense of certainty is ultimately elusive.

Agnilism aligns with the nihilistic perspective that life has no inherent meaning or purpose. It challenges the notion that there’s an ultimate guide or plan for humanity, suggesting instead that

any purpose or meaning is something individuals construct within their minds, and that by removing this false sense of meaning, we can truly focus on our individual goals we hope to accomplish in life.

In this view, even if a creator exists, humanity was left to stand or fall on its own, with no prescribed path or purpose.

By combining agnosticism’s open-mindedness with nihilism’s acknowledgment of life’s inherent meaninglessness, Agnilism proposes that individuals can find freedom in accepting uncertainty and embracing the creation of personal goals, and developing deeper relationships, even in a purposeless universe.
